             Essay on King Lear
             King Lear, a famous tragedy written by William Shakespeare tells the story of a king who decides to split up his kingdom between his three daughters and it is only at the end of the play that he finally realizes the true nature of both Regan and Goneril. One of the main ideas which is portrayed in Shakespeare's tragedy is the sense of evil between the characters and how evil is overbalanced by good in the world of King Lear. In fact, it is through the main characters of the play that Shakespeare clearly points out how human nature is either entirely good or entirely evil : some characters experience a transformation where their nature is changed ( Lear ) , and some others are either completely evil ( Edmund ) or entirely good ( Cordelia ).
             At the beginning of the play , Lear has his three daughters compete for their inheritance by judging who will prove him more love : it is from this moment that the audience clearly distinguish the good from the evil in each character.
             Goneril and Regan are symbols of true evil in the play.Cruel, cold , selfish , untruthful and ungrateful, the two of them form an evil force that destroys everything that they contact. In their search for power they lie to Lear flattering him with hypocritical words : Regan and Goneril succeed in reducing their father into a state of madness. However we must be aware that Goneril is represented as even more evil than her sister Regan , in fact she is even represented as the most evil character in the familial crimes taking place. It is also important to note that women as the most evil characters is not a new experience for Shakespeare : just before writing King Lear , Shakespeare created a Lady Macbeth who sacrifies her own children to gain more power.
