Also, in the scene where George and Lennie are introduced to the bunkhouse (after Curly has threatened Lennie), Lennie says 'I don't like this place'. The use of slow, melancholy music and a slow dolly into a close up shot is used in an attempt to reach the responder on an emotional level. Although, it does not accurately depict the necessity and desperately of the situation, but merely foretells the upcoming events. In the novel, Steinbeck hammers into the responder's mind the fact that they cannot leave because they need the work and the money. As George tells Lennie, 'We gotta keep it till we get a stake. We can't help it, Lennie. We gotta stay.' Sinise has used the combination of lighting, music, cinematography, dialogue and costume to portray the theme of the struggle for survival, though it ultimately lacks an element of depth that the novel provided.
