first church established in Britain was the Church of England. But even though England had an established religion not all of its occupants agreed on their selection. Being a Roman Catholic was not a crime in Britain, but there was a fine for not committing to the established religion, which meant not attending Protestant services. Paying these fines meant that u did not have to attend service but it did not allow a Roman Catholic to have a priest or worst of all practice the Catholic faith. Even with all this pressure of just a religion the worshipers were zealots and refused to merge with the other religions. On that note it was even illegal to be a Catholic priest in England and the punishments were even more severe to be a Jesuit. In the Elizabethan Era non-conforming Catholics were called recusants and were known as being guilty of recusancy (Secara, 2002). One of the ways the Church of England would regulate religious freedom was to require everyone to attend an Anglican service at least one a month, this was referred to as the Prayer Service or even the Lord's Super. Then again in every civilization there is always a group of individuals who chose to attend mass which is a Catholic service even though it was illegal to hold or attend one during the time. Although in a society were the royalty reigned anyone of high social status would rarely be punished. Within the religion there are certain relics such as the rosary, which is like the one in modern day. The rosary cross usually doesn't include the corpus or any form of Christ but it can usually mean the same to the barer.
