Affirmative action

             Affirmative action was first devised by President Kennedy in 1960s. It mission was to prevent discrimination against blacks at work places, colleges and others.
             Later in 1965, President Johnson set affirmative action into practice by signing the civil rights act of 1964. This broadened the affirmative action program by including gender equality and diversity together with racial equality. Today affirmative action is a program, which ensures that blacks, minorities, women, disabled, and underrepresented are given equal opportunities at work places, colleges, schools, employment, scholarships, financial aid, etc.
             Affirmative action since 1960s has been both praised and criticized for its efforts. Critics of affirmative action say that it unfair because it keeps qualified students and employers out by providing the seats to minorities who are not as qualified. Affirmative action in past has kept whites out of jobs and admission they deserved. Critics claim that affirmative action instead uses reverse discrimination. Providing minorities, blacks and women seats by rejecting a qualified person is a type of discrimination. Critics are highly opposed to using affirmative action when it comes to admission. They believe that it is unfair to say no to a qualified student and admit a student who is a minority instead.
             According to CNN news President Bush has set forth a proposal to eliminate the use of race in admission process, "Bush's proposal bans consideration of race in awarding state contracts and in admissions to state colleges and universities." In Florida more and more people want an end to affirmative action. Critics also believe that affirmative action will not provide an incentive to work hard, and it will make them dependent.
