The Causes of Imperialism

             The definition of imperialism is the ambition of a powerful nation to dominate the political, economic and cultural affairs of another nation or region. The question that has been asked is why in this period of history do all of a sudden European powers begin a blitz to imperialize. The answer has been debated upon but has been concluded to be because of ideological, economic and political reasons on why imperialism occurred.
             Ideologically, there were 3 reasons for imperialism. The first is religion. This is mostly Christian missionaries, Protestant and Catholic alike who attempted to spread their beliefs to the people of the colonies. They set up schools and educated people about their respective Christianity. Another was Rudyard Kipling's, "White man's burden." This was the theory that the west was culturally advanced in comparison to other places such as Africa. This theory expressed that the "white man"- who represents the western people- have a responsibility in spreading their culture to non-westerners. And finally, the third ideological reason was another theory known as social Darwinism. Darwin created a scientific theory, which explained the survival of the fittest. Originally, when this was strictly a scientific theory, it stated how one animal has superiority over another animal because of some favorable characteristics it had. That animal will continue to reproduce while the other, weaker animal will die out. Sometime later this theory was applied to society. Darwin did not intend for it to be applied to society because there are different standards in human society. Social Darwinism said that those who acquire wealth was because of their superiority over the weak. Similarly, if you acquire wealth your superiority grows and the weak will fall until there is no weaker. Hitler strongly believed in this theory.
