The musical production of Chicago is based around the murder and greed that took place,
in Chicago, during the 1920s. An important aspect of the mis-en-scene in this film is the make-up
and costumes of all the characters. The costume designer did a very nice job of showing the
fashion and style of this time period in the costumes of the characters. The women of this time
period were dressed in little clothes that showed lots of skin. These women were also called
flappers because of their risque clothing. At the beginning of the movie we are introduced to
Velma Kelly. She is a performer in a nightclub who dresses in colors of mostly black and other
bold colors. She is a very strong character, who has complete fearlessness. Another very
important character is Roxie Hart. Throughout the movie the audience sees her in the real world
and her dream world. In the real world she is usually dressed in neutral tones. In her imaginary
world she is dressed in stronger and more vibrant colors. In her dream world Roxie is the star of
the show and is more confident. Men in this time period are usually shown in suits. The more

props used in the film. Setting allows the audience to understand where the film is taking place
and props give clues to where. At the beginning of the film there is a shot of the Chicago
skyline, which includes the Wrigley and Tribune buildings, as well as the EL train. This give the
audience evidence that the movie takes place in Chicago. When we first meet Velma Kelly she is
