Ralph: The Quarrel Maker

             In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Ralph's idealistic nature, his influences as the leader and his continuous conflict with Jack contribute to the tragedies that befall the tribe of young boys during their habitation of the Island.
             After the initial tribe organization, some of the boys succumb to their primitive instincts and follow Jack as he leaves the main tribe. Jack has a violent and savage nature that corrupts him as he finally gains the power he has always craved. Ralph makes no effort to reunite the tribes and throws them into a conflict of leadership over the boys. Ralph serves as the protagonist of this novel by being the considerate democrat. Ralph's characteristics combine together to create his identity. Ralph's physical features become one of the reasons he is designated as the leader. Ralph's reactions, attitude changes and behavior before, during, and after certain events help discern the reality of his personality. Further, in the novel Ralph's characteristics alter to the very end when the boys are rescued. Ralph's idealism is his own undoing, as he becomes the savage's next prey. In the finale, Ralph's character will tear apart the main tribe in two and pitch their serene and harmonious society into a barbaric war.
             Ralph's physical properties help him survive and assert himself throughout the duration of time that he is on the Island. The first time Ralph's athleticism is described he is running through the forest at a fast pace. Then as Ralph arrives at the end of the forest, he begins to swim in the lagoon that he discovers. Ralph being physically fit makes it possible for him to go explore the Island hunt for food and escape capture at the hands of the savages.
