If I were asked which of the five senses would I least like to lose, I would absolutely detest loosing my sight. Having been able to see for over nineteen years, I would have great trouble adapting to the new change; the majority of the population would also have trouble coping with this new environment. Most of society takes for granted the sight given to them from birth, and they do not understand the difficulties that can occur once vision is lost. Whether it is minor retina damage or complete blindness, one's self could not function in the everyday world without having to call upon assistance. This person may feel the need to have a friend escort himher around, or he/she could choose to get a Seeing Eye dog.
             Could I recall how many steps it is from my bed to my bathroom? Those who have been blind for a period of time know these tedious actions. They know where the scissors are placed, they can decipher which can is corn and which can is green beans, and they know where each individual condiment is placed inside their fridge. The blind know these things because they adjusted to their environment, just as you and I would adjust given the circumstances. Likewise, it would take a great period of time for someone who had just lost their vision to learn all these new and sometimes frightening details.
             Such tasks can be handled alone, but these are just simple tasks around the house. Suppose he/she needed to go into town for groceries. What then? Well, he/she might ask a close friend to get the groceries for them, or if he/she lived in a large city, they might consider getting a Seeing Eye dog.
