All through out history certain brands have been considered to have more prestige then others. Fads come and go with teenagers and even some adults alike. The new craze about Abercrombie clothes among teens these days is obviously no exception. In the article "The tyranny of Abercrappie" by Damien Cave, some explanations to these trends are addressed as well as many of the stereotypes that go along with the people that fall into these fads. While the article doesn't give to many reasons to support the side of buying into these fads, I believe it does a good job of showing the author's views on the clothing and the opinions he has about the people that chose to wear this particular brand.
A large portion of this article consists of an older brother that is trying to convince his younger brother not to buy into fads that many young teenagers fall into. He states very clearly why buying these clothes not only makes you appear to be just like everyone else, but they are also over priced just simply because the designer knows that young teens will pay for them as long as they are considered 'cool'. One of his main arguments is also that not only will the clothes not make you be an individual which the ads make you feel are the big selling point, but you will end up looking like all of the other kids that have bought into the fad. Even his parents started giving him a hard time about how these kinds of clothes are not what will get you a girl friend, and in the end you will not even care about the shirt that you just spent 70 dollars on.
I also enjoy how they make out companies such as Abercrombie and all of the other fad stores out to be pretty much evil. Towards the end of the reading, when all of the kids are opening their Christmas gifts the older brother and the parents find out that they gave in and gave him all of the Abercrombie clothes he wanted.
