Metal Detectors in Schools

             Metal detectors, if put in schools, can prevent violence. In schools where gang violence occurs, metal detectors can help make them safer. Metal detectors, if used responsibly can prevent violence in schools by eliminating the possessions of weapons that can cause great harm.
             First, the use of metal detectors can alert a screener of the possession of weapons before they get into schools and other public places. If metal detectors can diminish school violence by stopping the possession of weapons I believe they need to be installed. In Los Angeles, California, schools the possession rate of weapons decreased 25% since the input of metal detectors (www.arc.org, "Research on violence"). If LA schools, one of the most violent school systems in the country, can have a success rate, others can too. If schools can be safe again then I believe that metal detectors are a worthy investment. After the Tragic shootings in places like Kentucky and the Columbine students need to feel safe again (www.cnn.com, "Public Position on School shootings"). Shootings like columbine need to be forgotten and taken care of so they never happen again. If metal detectors can help kids to feel safe again then they should be installed. In The United States there were 10,950 attacks with weapons and 10% of all public schools had a serious shooting all of which happened in one year (Koch p.882). These attacks need to be stopped because 10,950 attacks with weapons is too much I mean, what's next.
             Metal and explosive detectors can help prevent the use of bombs in schools and public places. However in 1992 there were 55 deaths in schools, 4 of which were by some sort of explosive (Koch). Obviously, bombs can be just as deadly or deadlier than weapons and need to be factored into the equation if they are threatening people.
