By definition, a community is a group of people living and working together in an area. With this definition, the world can be seen as one big community, for every nation interacts with another in some way. Each country can be seen as individual communities as well. The states, provinces, cities, neighborhoods, even families are all communities in their own way. The smaller the community, the more important the role of each individual is to contributing to the community. In larger communities, the importance of the roles of individuals are lost due to sheer amount of people.
             In smaller communities, such as small towns and villages, each person has a specific role they play. Each person has a job. There are some who are the law enforcement, some who make up the government, some who produce and sell food, some who make up the healthcare, and many more jobs. Without any one of these specific duties being fulfilled, the community will not function properly. From the workers up to the rich business owners, each person has a duty to the community in which they live.
             Individualism can be defined as a tendency to emphasize an individual and the individual's needs over a group and the group's needs. The overall well-being of an individual is important with respect to individualism. This emphasis on individual needs contrasts with the idea of community, and yet it goes hand in hand with it. Especially in smaller communities, as previously stated, if one individual is not contributing their fair share to the group, the whole group suffers because of it.
             If one individual is failing to contribute to their community for whatever reason, it can directly affect another individual in the community. For example, if a doctor is not doing his or her job at providing adequate and reliable healthcare to his or her patients, the ability of those patients to function properly within the society is compromised.
