Motor Develpment

             Human development spans a lifetime from the point of conception to the point of death. We are each unique individuals and the development of a person as a whole, which include the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor components, may not occur at the same age or same rate as another individual.
             Motor development is no exception. Even though motor development is age-related and sequential, each learner acquires and develops movement abilities and skills within his/her own due time. Many other factors contribute to the learner's timetable as to acquiring these skills. These factors include: biological, environmental, and specific task-related demands.
             A child first enters the reflex phase and then the rudimentary phase. Between the ages of 2-7, a child will enter the fundamental phase of motor development. This is the phase in which experience and opportunities are key factors in the learner developing mature fundamental motor skills. A child by the age of six years old has the capability to acquire mature fundamental skills. Children entering this phase need many opportunities to practice their skills, need competent instruction and instructors, and have a positive learning environment to acquire these skills. Many children do not have these components of motor development and therefore only acquire elementary fundamental skills.
             Children's work is primarily play and is composed of movement. And as children enter elementary school, organized sports are introduced. But mature fundamental movement skills should be developed before a child is introduced to sport skills. Many sport activities require mature fundamental skills as a prerequisite. For example, in soccer, a player needs the mature fundamental skill of kicking so that the player can develop the specialized skill of instep kicking and other kicking movements.
