             Coleridge's mentality being of the sublunary realm, is re-emphasized through his statement "measureless to man" insinuating that nature is intangible and beyond rational thinking. Coleridge's beliefs in nature and the supernatural is reflected in the river "sacred river..... so twice five miles of fertile ground." The river is linked to the complexities of life with its surreal calm facade hiding its deep turmoil beneath. This journey of the river is an extended metaphor for the journey of life from birth "A mighty fountain was forced", through life's experiences "mazy motion", and finally to the inevitable death where it sinks into the sunless sea". This Romantic notion of the imagination further emphasizes the importance of experiences as a means of "discovering wisdom".
             "Kubla Khan" lacks consistency in the emotions portrayed towards the dome and the environment. The first stanza uses short lines of iambic tretrameter and a regular rhythm to describe the setting as a luscious earthy paradise "gardens bright with sinuous hills...incense beaming trees." Coleridge's opinion then takes another path at the gardens where the speaker incorporates the magical and supernatural elements of Romantic poetry "a savage place as holy and enchanted." It is once again in the third stanza that the persona's description changes to take a religious stance "a miracle of rare device."
