In my opinion the book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain is considered The Great
American Novel. It goes over many subjects like racism, society, morals and ect. This book help students understand
more clearly about the time period of life in the past and how blacks and whites were segregated.
The novel is set in the South and is considered a book over racism. Blacks were slaves with no legal rights and
were mostly known as property instead of them being humans. Miss Waltson decides to sell Jim which made it sound
like Jim was more of an item. As Jim heard the conversation of him being sold he ran away knowing what his
consequence may be. Jim was known to be called a "nigger" and many other bad names. This word was a common
word back in Twain¡¯s time which is now very offensive to many people. The kind of language used in the book helps us
understand the concept of how badly blacks were being treated. Huck comes from a family of low class who were very
racist and in turn made him racist also. Huck shows the characteristics of a racist person many times during the novel
and does this without even realizing how harmful it was because it comes naturally. I believe Huck felt bad for the way
he treated Jim, although Jim was black.
Throughout the book, the society was filled with hypocrites and Huck had to deal with a number of them. Miss
Watson was displayed as a hypocrite by Huck. "Pretty soon I wanted to smoke, and asked the widow to let me. But
she wouldn't. And she took snuff too; of course that was all right, because she done it herself" (Twain pg. 8). Huck did
not understand why she does not want him to smoke. "That is just the way with some people. They get down on a thing
when they don't know nothing about it" (Twain pg. 8). As for the Grangerfords they give, Huck a place to stay and
