"There are in every age, new errors to be rectified and new prejudices to be opposed" (Samuel Jackson). I believe this quote can ultimately relate to Night and My Forbidden Face because prejudice is a reoccurring theme in the novels. According to Webster's New World Dictionary the word prejudice is defined as "an opinion that implies a preconceived and unreasonable judgment or opinion, usually one marked by suspicion, fear, intolerance, or hatred." This may be the way Webster and some go about defining the word prejudice, but in my opinion prejudice can be described as unfair treatment, violence against different ethnic groups, and segregating various nationalities for one's personal benefit.
In today's society, there are various ways in which prejudice acts are used to benefit one's own self. For example, when I was in the sixth grade I rode bus 160 where I had my first experience with a prejudice environment. The blacks would constantly pick on the white kids and were extremely rude just so that they could boost their own self-esteem. If I was to ever bump into them while I was getting off the bus, I faced the fear of getting hit or pushed, and then laughed at for the rest of the year. I saw this occur more than once to other people. Not only in society is prejudice present between blacks and whites but among many of the other different ethnic groups. Similarly, due to the rapid increase in population of Hispanics, many Americans have categorized them as "Dirty Mexicans," and may feel as though they are taking over the U.S.A when they are primarily immigrating here for a better life. I believe that people having prejudice mind sets about different ethnic groups is due to the fact that it is beneficial to themselves. Unfortunately, this brings fear and sorrow to others.
