Lord Of the FLies

In the novel lord of the flies many themes are represented to show the evil that resides within man. William Golding shows that certain situations can bring out the worst in all of us. The boys arrive really excited for the loss of rules and authority figures, but there excitement soon leads to regression to their ancestral roots. They become savages and transform into something evil and lose all their recollection of their past lives and society. The fact that the people in this novel were boys was not relevant, because evil lies within us all. In William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies and in our society, cruelty grows as people's fear of themselves grows.
As time passes, the boys begin to resemble less and less of the civilized British schoolchildren they used to be. Their uniforms deteriorate and their hair grows long and ragged. A marked boundary begins to grow between the younger children who play all day, and the older children who seem to be growing divided as to their responsibilities. Jack introduces his hunters to the notion of camouflaging their faces with mud and clay they found on the island. This gradual masking of their identities allows them to become more ruthless and effective hunters. "...the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness." (Golding 64). The masks they begin to wear seem to give them the ability to put aside their morals and act more like savages then little boys. As time begins to pass more and more boys begin to put on masks to hide themselves because they are afraid of what they are doing and need some security. The mask gives them something to hide behind and gives them the power to do uncivilized things. Yet a few boys remain civilized and will not let them selves become savages. "Well, we won't be painted, said Ralph, because we aren't savages.' (Golding 172) Ralph
