hool in Cedarville and completed her education at Rockford Seminary, a "female" college located in Rockford, Illinois. Following her graduation from Rockford, Jane went on to attend Women's Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After her first semester, Jane became ill due to an onset of Tuberculosis of the spine, a disease she had contracted as a child. The recurrence of this disease required Jane to have a painful back surgery and a long recovery, which, in turn, forced her to quit medical school. For the next couple of years, Jane really had no direction in her life. She had completed her education and, unlike most women of her time, was not ready to be settled with a husband and children. Jane craved more than just the formality of family life, but was unsure of what path she should take to create the ideal life for herself. During this time Jane took a trip to Europe, in which she remained for two years. Before her passage to Europe, Jane's plans included visiting museums, attending theatres, viewings of infamous works of art, and other recreations people of money generally practiced during their visits to Europe. Some of these activities she had partaken in, but Jane also came to discover that Europe contained a society in which she had never seen. There were missionaries whom took tourists to the poor neighborhoods of London only to witness the Saturday-night food auctions which took place. Jane had watched men, women, and children bid on rotting fruits and vegetables in order for them and their families to have something to eat. During her stay in Germany, Jane witnessed the mistreatment of women laborers who were being badly scorched and scarred from carrying huge containers overfilled with hot liquids used to make beer.
