matewan

             Matewan is a town in West Virginia. A pivotal point in America's history as a capitalist society happened in the beginning of Matewan's legacy. The times were very tough and people in the United States were moving from an agrarian to an urban society. There were not enough jobs for all of the people that were moving to the city of Matewan. The main job was mining coal and there was only Coal Company in the area. Coal is the major source of income for the whole community. The coal company new that the town and its people relied solely on the company's jobs, and there were no labor laws during this time in the nation. So the company could make any rules and regulation that they wanted. Since the coal company owned almost everything in town including: housing, local stores, and the majority of the land they could enforce any policies that they wanted because any worker they had lived in the companies housing. With the company owning the town they did not treat the workers with the respect and dignity that they deserved. The coal company did not respect the workers so they did not treat them fairly. This made the relationship between the company and the workers very poor.
             There were many different approaches for the workers trying to deal with coal company issues. The majority of workers were scared of the company and the repercussions that the company could have. So for any one to stand up to the company they were taking a risk. Union was the answer that the people came up with. This is bringing the workers together, working as one in every decision that is made. If something is happening that the worker does not like he/she may approach the union and the union can stand up for that person and all the workers.
