Kurtz, a man who strived to achieve his goals, lost touch when he went into the Congo not only with the outside world, but also with himself. When Kurtz left his fiancée his he had a goal to make enough money to make their wedding acceptable among the higher class. His troubles began when he allowed money and greed to become the center of his life. Kurtz's true feelings about what he had become appeared when he drew a blindfold over the eyes of the picture of his fiancée. He had felt ashamed of what he had become and looking at her picture everyday only made him feel worse. Back at home where Kurtz had left her, his fiancée waited loyally and faithfully for him. She had no idea what had happened to him and she continued to hold on to the thought that he would come back for her.
             Marlow, a moral and compassionate man, felt it his obligation to talk to Kurtz's fiancée after Kurtz died. Marlow could not bear the thought of Kurtz's fiancée feeling unloved and unwanted after all the years that she had waited patiently. Marlow knew in his mind that he alone knew that Kurtz no longer cared about his fiancée, so he knew that telling her Kurtz still loved her was better than destroying her livelihood by telling her the truth. Marlow was right to lie to her about Kurtz's feelings for her, to do otherwise would only hurt her. It would only cause damage to her and no good would come of it.
