There are many ways in which people can become personally acquainted with and appreciative of people from different backgrounds. The main thing is to be open and accepting to the fact that they do things differently and to be willing to learn about it. You can choose to learn and live with them by going to their sections in town (china town, little Italy). You can also show this by eating their foods and changing your normal habits to be like them (eating with chop sticks) when you do this you show you care. A good way to learn about a culture is to visit their home country because this is where their tradition and way of life is made. To get a first hand experience with the country will help you understand and appreciate their different customs. You could also learn more about their beliefs and culture in a less extreme way by taking a course our taking the time to learning their language.
             Basically just treating people who share different beliefs as you the same as you would treat any other person is the best way to become personally acquainted. Paying attention to them, including them and befriending them are the best ways to show this. Allowing yourself to like someone based on personality before even knowing anything about their background is how this is possible. Although their background shouldn't play apart on you decision of what you think about the person, unfortunately it does and that is how racism begins. If you have a large interest in someone not being afraid to date them shows that you have over come the differences and are focusing on your similarities.
