One day white watching Who Wants to be a Milliionaire, I turned to my mother and began to inform her on my day at school. I started off by telling her exhausted ply metrics in P.E. class made me, how difficult it is to get to Z hallway from B hallway, and finishing off by asking her what's for dinner. She replied with a careless "huh?". I couldn't believe it! My very own mother didn't pay attention to my well thought out, well,thoughts! After reading, Now Hear This!, I now know that the lack of listening skills in most households are particiularly low.
My family listens to each other reasonably well. Although, we do have our moments when we tune each other out. If it's something insignificant then we might hear that you're talking but may not listen to what you have to say. There is a big difference between listening and hearing. Hearing means being able to make contact with sounds but listening means being able to comprehend what is being said. Sometimes we may forget to listen to each other but we make sure that we're heard.
Not being very attentive to each other affects our communication and interaction. If someone is feeling neglected by a family member, they might retreat to themselves and may not want to talk have any more talks. Everyone has the need of being heard. Most of the time we really don't feel like talking to each other. While at home everyone is doing different things, homework, watching television, talking on the phone, surfing the net, etc. I believe everyone needs to be heard in each and every family.
My family can improve our listening skills by taking time to listen, resisting internal distractions, and really thinking about what is being said. If we would take time out of our busy schedules then the other person would feel more appreciated. We should also resist internal distractions as well as external distractions.
