Hebrews 12:1- Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin, which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
How many have ever heard of Lance Armstrong? Probably most of you. Everyone knows that he is a world-renowned cyclist. He has won countless races, and is known worldwide. But many people don't know that Armstrong during his earlier racing years was diagnosed with cancer. Now knowing this, most people would just give up and just as soon die. That is the attitude of many of our generation. If something bad comes along, then we just decide that everything is hopeless and give up. Let's look at the first few words of this scripture. "Let us, (God's people) lay aside every weight." Now this weight can be different for different people. The weight or burden could be your home life. Maybe your parents just got a divorce, and you are blaming yourself, God, or possibly both. You might have a problem at school holding you back. It might be that you fell that no one understands you, that you are alone. You might even be struggling in school, and have lost all self-confidence in yourself. What ever your problem may be, I'm here to tell you that God is here to get you through these trials and situations that may be a barrier in your life right now. God will take that burden, he will take the weight of off you, if you will only ask and seek him. For God is the God who mends broken families and who is your friend when know one else is. He is the God who restores self-confidence, and puts faith and hope in its place. Cancer came to Armstrong's life, just as these trials may come into yours. But Armstrong didn't just give up and listen to the world. He set in his mind that he had a goal to finish, and that was finishing the race. He wasn't going to let anything keep him from that goal.
