How cities are constructed, shaped and formed? Have been thought, talked and studied for centuries. Kevin Lynch and Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, also known as Le Corbusier, are just two of many who have written articles on the subject of city planning and the perception of what a city is.
             The article that Kevin Lynch has written deals with the idea that people remember cities different ways, but in these ways are certain core guidelines that everyone follows. At the core are a set of elements; Paths, Edges, Districts, Nodes, and Landmarks. These five elements represent the basis for the certain ways that people remember the city. Most people use a little from each category, it depends on what their routines and jobs are like. A truck driver will use these elements much different than a student would. The truck driver will most likely use paths to a great extent, since his life revolves around driving from 'A' to 'B' he is more likely to associate the city with the way he can navigate through and around the city, this can include streets, walkways and other means of traveling in the city. Edges are seen, as barriers that separate one area from another, such as shorelines and walls, like the Great Wall of China. Districts are areas that people consider to enter mentally, such as Chinatown or Little Italy. Nodes are considered the main focus of a district, such as a Chinese restaurant, which is situated in the Chinese district. Landmarks are easily recognizable features of a city, such as the CN Tower. All these elements are used in Lynch's interpretation of how cities are thought of by the general public.
             Le Corbusier uses a set geometrical pattern to create his city. Everything can and should be designed and run the same as machines are.
