While the north was booming with immigration from countries such as Ireland, France, and Germany, the South missed out on the rise of immigration as a result of the use of slavery because it drove down the wages of any non-slave laborers in the south. The north focused on trade with all countries, while the south mainly traded with England. The trade with England kept the south very loyal the old country. Trade by the south to England was made easier because of the all waterways to and into England along with the rivers and channels that lead directly into the plantations in the south. Trade with England was also much quicker then trading with the north was, which also made it cheaper for the consumer. With slavery now more profitable than ever, the industrial revolution totally skipped southern states, which was another factor that kept them dependent on agriculture and gave them a more independent attitude from the North.
