as having been repeated....time"(131). The caste system in Maycomb, a social structure in which classes are determined by heredity, affects races and it also affects whites amongst themselves. The economic and social status is categorized in three classes; the upper class, the middle class, and the lower class. These classifications are due to the importance of individual progression.
The upper class level is formed by the town's professional men; such as, Atticus, Dr. Reynolds, Judge Taylor, and also the members of the Missionary Society. These people have taken the time to get a higher education. Scout, the narrator, illustrates an example of this when she says:
During his first five years in Maycomb, Atticus practiced economy more than anything; for several years thereafter he invested his earnings in his brother's education.... after getting Uncle Jack started, Atticus derived a reasonable income from the law. He liked Maycomb, he was Maycomb County born and bred; he knew his people, they knew him, and because of Simon Finch's industry, Atticus was related by blood or marriage to nearly every family in town. Scout has even recognized that her father has invested his time in economy due to the importance of it in their town. Upper class people are respected in Maycomb and education is the key to belonging to that class. As a result Mr. Finch, Dr. Reynolds, and Judge Taylor are respected in their town because of their economic and social status. For example, Atticus is very recognized because he is a lawyer; Dr. Reynolds because he is a doctor, and Mr. Taylor because he is a judge.
