             Martin fixes the truck himself to impress Eileen and puts on "A clean button down shirt, jeans." He also "scrubbed his nails until his fingertips felt painfully raw" wanting to wash away the stains to leave the past and see a change. He worries about minor details around him that hardly matter. He is not very courageous and so does not gather the courage to call or at least return Eileen's phone call.
