Dances With Wolves starts with John Dunbar a lieutenant, in the Union Army, who hurt his leg in battle. In the surgeon tent he over heard the Surgeon saying he was going to amputate Johns leg. So he gets out of there. John Dunbar found something to pry his boot back on and a stick to bite on because of how pain full prying the boot on was. John Walked out and Got on his horse and returned back into the battlefield. What John did out there on his horse was suicide, he rode directly in front of the Confederate Army, which distracts all of the Confederate Army as they fire shots at John. The Union army fires at the Confederate Army and kills them off while John Dunbar miraculously survives without one shot hitting him. Because of what john did he is rewarded by getting to choose whatever post he wants.
He chose to go to the Frontier, because he wants to see it before the white men started developing houses and such on it. He was sent with a peasant that was going that way already. On the way John Dunbar found this abandoned post and he stopped to look at it and eventually decided to stay there at the post. On the peasants way back the Indians found him traveling back and they brutally killed him by firing arrows, and scalping his face. Which made John Dunbar the only white man there at the time. While he was there he would entertain him self by writing in his journal or talking to his horse. One day John spotted a wolf that kept coming around, and John said if he came around again he would give him the name of two socks because of his white paws that resembled socks. The Land of the Frontier was plain and filled with acre's of grass, and there was no buffalo in sight around that time too. As the days went by John was encountered by some Indians from a village not far from Johns post. One of the Indians started to charge towards John, and as he got close john pulled out his gun, and the Indian stopped and was screaming out things...
