"Joe" is a very simple name. Therefore, in relation to that, Joe in Great Expectations is a simple, good and moral character. Joe doesn't change book whatsoever. He is a great example of a static character. Joe begins the book by showing his generosity and good nature when, after supposedly being robbed by the convict, he was happy that the convict didn't starve. In the middle of the book, after all Pip had done to him after he became a "gentleman", Joe was still affectionate and loving towards him during his worst hours while being sick. Also, throughout the book, Mr. Joe Gargery appeared as though he was happy with himself and proud to be who he was. He never wanted money, property, or fame. Joe even turned down Mr. Jaggers when he offered him money because Pip wasn't his apprentice anymore. His kind heart overcame all of the bitterness that everyone else seemed to throw at him and he never changed for anyone.
In contrast, Estella is a very dynamic character; although her change does take place later on in the book, she goes from being a girl with a heart of ice to a sensitive woman. At the start of the book Estella is very unkind and insulting to Pip. This isn't her own nature, and that's why it's possible for her to change into a better person further into the chapters. Miss Havisham brought up Estella to crush the hearts of all men, because she was once herself hurt at one time. Estella is forced to stay with Miss Havisham since she is the only family Estella has ever known. Due to the fact that she is bound to Miss Havisham, she's obligated to serve as one of her tools of vengeance. When Miss Havisham dies, however; that bond is gone and Estella's true nature can finally overcome her. Since Estella is at heart, a well-meaning person, she does soften up and evolve into this gratious creature. No longer is she only beautiful physically, but her personality is strikingly attractive as well. This occurs...
