Harrison Bergeron Paper

In the short story "Harrison Bergeron," by Kurt Vonnegut, the characters are all made equal. In this story there are many good examples of why nobody should be exactly alike. The government tries to get everyone to be the same inequality and they succeed. I think this story was interesting, but only because of the important themes brought about by the characters. It made me realize how important it is to have differences in skills and knowledge. The main theme is that nobody should be exactly equal to one another. Another theme is that the government shouldn't control every aspect of our lives.

People are given handicap restrictions to make the people higher in skills and knowledge equal to those who aren't as smart or skillful. One example is that one of the characters named George has to wear a "little mental handicap radio," at all times. The purpose of it is to scramble his thoughts. It is tuned to a "government transmitter," and goes off every twenty seconds. It keeps people like George from "taking unfair advantage of their brains." Another example of the equality is that the ballerinas have to wear bags with lead balls around their necks and masks. This makes them less graceful and capable of doing what everyone else can. This story shows that not everyone should be exactly equal. Everyone has their differences and they should be left alone.
Another theme in this short story is the government shouldn't control every aspect of our lives. Int the story the government makes everyone equal to one another. They don't let the people live their lives as their own. Everyone is made as equal as the least intelligent person. The government even made laws about taking off
