Amy Johnson was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. She even fixed her plane's torn canvas wings with adhesive bandages. (Bull 32) Brave individualists set an example to those who were afraid to show any courage. Women were not the only individualists. Men like Charles Lindbergh, who flew from New York to Le Bourget Field in France, was the first to cross the Atlantic by plane in a matter of 33:1/2 hours. (Hanson 80-81)
             Being a barnstormer, or individualist, was not all about doing it for the ride. The money the pilot made helped pay the rent. Veteran pilots performed aerial stunts in rural America. (Feinstein 20) These old favorites of the Civil War and battles that came and went, took to flying the airplane for a simple dime. Money was a huge part of the stock market, and the same went for those who fell into the airplane industry. Five bucks would get a volunteer a ride on these fast and crazy machines. Stunts like walking on the wings of the airplane, cached the eyes of a wondering man or woman at a local air show. Ten percent of the money made that day would go to the ground crew. (Woodworth 1) These were the people who would bring in the passengers like a herd of cattle, but people were skeptical and afraid to fly, so it was not easy. To add comfort, a sales pitch might be, "To get the real feel of flying, the open cockpit biplane is the only way to go." (Woodworth 2) Other times, people would scam others for their money. A barnstormer would storm a barn, dropping a chunk of ice on the roof of a farm. Then they would land the plane to go bet the farmer it had hailed. Next the barnstormer would go and show the farmer the chunk of ice, take his money, and laugh all the way home. (Feinstein 20)
