             The roots of Hip Hop culture sink decades deep into the soil of urban civilization. The term "Hip Hop" was coined by DJ Kool Herc, meaning that the beats were hip hopping back and forth from one turntable to the other. Kool Herc and Bambatta are documented spinning breakbeats in the early seventies at park jams in the South Bronx. The popularity of Hip Hop music quickly spread from borough to borough through the streets of New York. It then remained a cultural phenomenon present only in New York City until the later 1970's when it began to expand outwards from its origins and manifest itself throughout the vast network of Urban America. By 1982 Hip Hop sounds could be heard in nearly every innercity in the country.
             The mass appeal and media explosion of the music came about after the advent of Hip Hop movies such as Wild Style and BeatStreet. It was then that Hip Hop music began its rise into mainstream society. Through music videos and radio airplay Hip Hop became a nation-wide phenomenon. Finally the last stretch of growth was achieved and the sounds became global, expanding to foreign countries mostly in Europe.
             The late 1980's ended the Golden Age of Hip Hop music... Big buisness was beginning to realize that Hip Hop music could be pimped into a way to hustle ideas and promotions to the large market of urban teens. The concept of "Rap music" spread nationwide and nearly every major softdrink company had managed to successfully rape Hip Hop through advertisement and promotion. The giant media expanse and the onslought of catchy dance music jingles invaded the airwaves.
             The advance of mass popularity caused by these marketable flashy emcees brought Hip Hop out of its mainly urban network, and into a new giant market of suburbia. The majority of Hip Hop remained on the low as media darlings in shiny pants danced over hijacked instrumentals.
