The basis of out constitution or rather the foundation upon which our

country is built has from the beginning stressed the importance of

separation between the church and the state. On the contrary to this

notion, every courtroom in our country contains the words "With God On

Our Side" behind the judges' seat. Clearly we don't have a separation of

church and state when we ask the witness to swear on the bible to tell

the truth while on stand, however we do try to draw a dotted line through

religion and church. The 1920's have been given an entire chapter in our

textbooks because of the events, which occurred during this period. The

roaring twenties as often referred to was the time when businesses were

thriving. People going to movies, enjoying life, work and technology was

the way people lived. We had already passed the World War I. It was also

the time when American culture was shaping itself. It isn't unheard of

having more than one opinion in a big country such as us. People of

united states of America don't always hold either totally conservative or

liberal views on all the issues, rather as times change as noted in

"Religion and Politics In America" by Fowler etal. He called it the

"Secularization Thesis". Marx, Weber, and Freud stated that within every

generation people were becoming more and more secular and that religion

will eventually be wept way. Dayton, Tennessee if we may call them the

part of the conservative south in the 1920's would have opposed of such

thesis and would have prohibited the teaching of it. The Scopes Trial, a

major political as well as historical event was the trial, which roved

that although it is against religion to believe in the Darwin scientific

theories of evolution, it should still be legal and not against religion

to learn and teach them. The Defendant, John Scopes in this case was a
