A woman in Hester Prynne's situation would tend to feel ashamed and alienated. Hester Prynne contradicts the ordinary and is, to the reader's surprise, the opposite. Hester is proud, she does not hide behind the brand that she had been forced to wear for the rest of her days. She is an independent woman that can take care of herself as well as most of the community. Hester is intelligent; she questions ideas that no puritan during the 18th century dare think of questioning. Hester Prynne is the epitome of a respectable woman.
             Hester Prynne is a confident woman. As she left the jail and passed by the numerous spectators, she held her head high and did not stir. A woman in Hester's circumstance would feel inferior and maybe shield herself from the stares and hurtful words. But not Hester, she held her proof of her sin for all to see. Her beautiful, yet illegitimate, baby girl was rested in her arms in plain sight. She intricately embroidered the patch she wore on her breast and she wore it as if it were the latest fashion. Even though the "A" meant a sin punishable by death. She is strong willed as well. When asked to identify the father of Pearl she would not reveal him. ""I will not speak . . . And my child must seek a heavenly father; she shall never know an earthly one!" (Hawthorne 3). It can be implied by this quote that Hester is ready to take care of her child by herself.
             She is independent. Her daughter and her live on the border of the forest isolated from the rest of the community. Hester takes care of her daughter and herself, as well as providing clothing for the rest of the community.
