y the white neighboring town. The town was burned because a white woman, Fannie Taylor, accused a black man of beating her in her house on January 1, 1923. The town believes she was raped and beat. The sheriff began looking for the escaped convict, Jesse Hunter, as being the one who did it. The whites of Sumner began to look for him in Rosewood, going into people's homes unannounced and taking the men and questioning them about the whereabouts of Jesse Hunter. The lynching started when they killed Sam Carter, a blacksmith who was accused of helping the accused get away. They then turn to the Carrier's house where they think Sylvester Carrier is hiding Hunter. A shoot out begins and Sarah Carrier and other people die. The other women and children run into the woods, by order of Sylvester, to hide from the "mob" and try to survive. Mr. Wright, a white storeowner in Rosewood, with the help of the Bryce brothers, owners of the Seaboard train that ran from Cedar Key to Gainesville, helped the blacks escape
