When President George W. Bush stated that North Korea was one of the countries in the "axis of evil" along with Iraq and Iran, he was suggesting that the U.S. views it as a regime that supported terrorism and would never change their ways. This has held true since he made that statement in his 2001 State of the Union speech. The North Koreans have always been very secretive about their military, and their nuclear weapons production which has led the U.S. to believe we should be threatened by them.
             North Korea is internationally unpopular, and their economy is one of the poorest in the world. Millions of North Korean citizens are malnourished and cannot function in their day to day lives because of the lack of food. The question many people have about North Korea is how the majority of the population can be starving while the military is still managing to produce weapons of mass destruction. The answer to this question is unknown but it leads the U.S. to believe the weapons North Korea is producing are being used to fund terrorism.
             According to the U.S. the North Koreans told the U.S. they already have nuclear weapons, and they were threatening to test them or sell them to others if a security deal was not reached. The leaders of Pyongyang want the U.S. to sign a non-aggression pact and aid their weak economy in exchange for the giving up of their nuclear production. Even though the U.S. says it has not plans to attack North Korea the North Koreans feel that they are next after Iraq.
             It would probably be in the best interest of the U.S. not to start a full-scale war with North Korea because it would be much more difficult to take over than Iraq. The reasons it would be more difficult are, one the terrain is much more difficult to get through, two the North Korean army is far better trained than the Iraqi army, and three there are very close heavily populated areas of South Korea.
