Macbeth

             In the play "Macbeth", written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is portrayed as being a tragic hero. He is a butcher, a tyrant, and a traitor. He is also a man of honor, a man of conscience and courage. Macbeth is very courageous, ambitious and a moral coward; all these things lead to his tragic death at the end of the play.
             The responder first perceives Macbeth as being a brave solider, a man of honor, and noble to the kingdom. This is clearly shown as the king states "Oh valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!" At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is loyal to the king. While he did imagine of murder his mind rejects it and said, "If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me," - Act I, Sc 3, p.28. But he is corrupted by evil and by the ambition of his character and that of Lady Macbeth. This is because of the weakness of Macbeth's character and the strong power of Lady Macbeth and how she is easily able to manipulate and influence him. His swordsmanship is a prominent trait and is demonstrated again at the very end of the play when he is forced to endeavor to defend his life.
             Throughout the play evil is symbolised by the witches, but what is one of the most important observation is the fact that the character of Banquo, another noble, is exposed to prophecies that appear almost as virtuous as what is told to Macbeth, and yet Macbeth's character choose to follow and believe the evil, thus let it overtake him. This is in contrast to Banquo's ideals as he believed that the witches were only telling them things that would please them, in order to earn their trust. "Win us with honest trifles, to betray's in deepest consequence."-Act I, Sc 3, p.28 This illustrates that Macbeth had a lust for power, whereas Banquo didn't entail this ambition and drive.
