Double standards: those little unspoken rules that say its okay for one to act a certain way but completely wrong for another. These standards are imposed on us in so many different ways that, sometimes, we don't even notice them. Just like in the twenties, women today have to constantly try to guide themselves around these 'rules.'
As women, our entire lives are filled with examples of double standards. Whether it's at school, work, or even at home, we are bombarded with our own separate set of rules for, what it seems, like no good reason at all.
When men burp, scratch, don't take a shower or clean their house, they are just being, well, men. But can you imagine a girl doing these sorts of things? Of course not, and not just because it's un-lady-like but it's just plain gross for a girl to do that. But, for a guy, it's almost expected of them.
Probably the most known double standard that exists today is sexual. When teenage boys have sex or even go out with a girl, they are widely praised for it. This support not only comes from their male friends (who were usually the ones who put the pressure for the sex in the first place), but some girls even find guys who sleep around more desirable. But, if a girl does the same thing she gets a reputation as a 'whore.' Once a girl has this label, it can become hard for her to get a date without the guy wanting something in return.
In a survey I found, 9 in 10 teens said that a girl should be a virgin, and 78% said that teen girls often lose their boyfriends because they won't have sex with them. So, in other words, our society says that girls should be virgins, but at the same time girls are getting dumped because they won't have sex with their boyfriends.
