If progress is truly the essence that drives America then this country needs to be prepared to change and accommodate the people behind that push. Almost everyday, lawmakers in Capitol Hill introduce new bills to protect the basic freedoms this country was founded on. Every individual deserves to enjoy this protection regardless of age, gender, race or other such differences that make up the culture of America. However, if the group calling themselves the Campaign for California Families succeeds in their attempts then those people with sexual orientations other than heterosexual will be stripped of the basic right to marry the person they want. They will have rights that are promised in the constitution unjustly taken away.
             At the end of this past weekend, over 2,600 same-sex couples were married in San Francisco. The courthouse clerk began issuing marriage licenses to these couples after the mayor instructed to "extend the same privileges that have been given to him and his wife." The media was eager to hear what San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom had to say. "I took an oath literally to support the constitution, and that's what I'm doing. The issue here is simple: The state's constitution does not permit discrimination at all, anywhere, period. We are in full compliance with our state's equal protection clause prohibiting discrimination in any form."
             A lot of America is beginning to disagree with the CCF's belief that "allowing gays and lesbians to wed dilutes to marriage between a man and a woman and allowing so poses a threat to Judeo-Christian values. Two men or two women cannot provide a working environment needed to raise a family." While it has been proven that the healthiest environment for raising children is a steady household with a mother and a father, it is not impossible for a gay or lesbian couple to provide a home that can be quite equal
