Why do we follow traditions? How did they all begin? And, do they have same use as they had before? Traditions have been practiced in many different cultures all over the world. No matter who the people in the culture are, there always have been violent customs followed without being aware of the consequences. And the people are not aware of why they are still following them. "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson is an example of a tradition which leads the people to the violence.
             In this story traditions consist of drawing the lottery every year. The story begins with a description of a cheerful small town "The flowers blossoming profusely and grass richly green" (78), but also Jackson pictures a peaceful day "clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day" (78). This leads the reader to think everything is normal. People gather together in the village square to the lottery and someone is going to win the prize, but we do not know what the winner wins or loses yet. However the author gives us sense about the lottery by mentioning the "Black box". The box that it has been used to conduct the lottery. It is black because it is representing death. Also, the way how the people stood together and their conversation "they stood together away from the pile of stones in the corner, and their jokes were quiet and they smiled rather than laughed" (78) shows us that the lottery was not really pleasant tradition for them.
             No one in the town seems to care much about the black box, it is an old splintery box, there is always discussion of people getting a new bow but nobody ever really pay attention to that. "Every year after the lottery, Mr. Summers began talking again about a new box, but every year the subject was allowed to fade off without anything's being done"(79).
