Internet Plagiarism

It is really worrying to note that a study conducted on 23 college campuses found that internet plagiarism is rising among students.
Lots of students are copying articles from the internet for their college assignments without bothering to cite the source.Easy internet access some are saying could be the cause.
But, what really is the reason for the students not to cite their sources of information? The least a student could do is to mention the website's address. It is really not that difficult to do. Perhaps the students consider internet cheating as "trivial" or not cheating at all. Some may be ignorant of the fact that they are required to cite their sources of references, be it from the internet or reference books. Even when someone needs to copy the exact words from a whole passage or direct quotes, it would not be difficult for them to put those words within quotation marks and then footnoting them accurately.
Failure to do so would be like stealing someone else's work and then putting your name to it. Copying another student's notes is also plagiarism. The student loses in the end because essay assignments not only teach research, they widen the student's knowledge of the subject researched.Sometimes, students are under pressure to perform well but lack the capability and knowledge, therefore, they resort to plagiarism hoping that they would not be discovered.
The media like the newspapers can do their part to help students by highlighting the seriousness of plagiarism, what constitute to plagiarism and how to prevent it so that students would be aware that it is wrong to use material from the internet without citing its source.
