and on. Are these actually heroes? Does one have to have
superhuman powers or special abilities to be considered a hero?
most children think so, but what about adults? Adults have a
different opinion for the word hero. The classic definition of hero
as cited in The American Heritage Dictionary is a man noted for
feats of courage or one who has risked or sacrificed his life for
others. This definition is the most commonly used one of all.
a recent example of this definition is the firefighters in New York
City. Their efforts to save the lives of the fallen victims will never
be forgotten. Each one of the firefighters continually gave time
and energy to the rescue efforts. Their heart and determination
kept them going when they were at the end. This type of
determination is a good example of a hero.
Another example might be a police officer saving someone from
an attacker. Each example represents someone risking his or her
own life for someone else. Is this the only definition of hero? No,

a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities. An
example of this definition may not be as glorifying to some people
as risking your life for someone else, but it has a great impact on
