Chivalry is a difficult thing to define. One cannot see it except in another's actions and one cannot touch it. It is an intangible but essential part of everyday life. Chivalry is a measure of our worth in society. For men in the Medieval Ages, there was no such thing as a knight without chivalry. Without chivalry, people would not fight for the rights of America and Americans. Without chivalry people would not stand up for themselves and have respect for others. Without chivalry, we would be nothing. Some say chivalry no longer exists, however it is alive now more than ever.
The job of a knight was to defend the kingdom in times of war, and a great deal of training was required to do so. The knight's duties on the battlefield formulate chivalric admiration of courage, strength and loyalty. A knight was also expected to be respectful, generous, and give aid to the poor and crippled. Generosity and their humble nature made the knight regarded as the protector of the defenseless. Today, America's knights are in the Marines, Army, Navy, and Air Force. These soldiers fight for America and every American that lives here. With an ongoing war in Iraq, no point is more evident than the fact that the soldiers put their lives in harms way to fight for people who cannot fight for themselves and medieval knights were just as selfless.
Many women say that chivalry is dead and believe that there are no true gentlemen in the world today, however rarely does a man not open the door for a woman. Men also let women walk in front of them when walking through a door or a crowd. Many men also still follow the motto, "Ladies first."
Whether in war or peace, chivalry still lives in every aspect of today. Although times have changed and the way chivalry is expressed tends to differ from five hundred years ago, chivalry is still something that is expressed and evident in a modern day life. There are no longer knights...
