Many children go through many hard times with their families, especially their parents. I know that I have had many conflicts and arguments with my parents, but I was always able to get through them. Chris McCandless seemed to run away from his problems with his family, which is one of the reasons why he went on his journey through Alaska. Chris found out issues from his past that had to do with his family that he could not deal with. He didn't want to have anything to do with his family, and he didn't want to communicate with them in any way. Chris's family loved their son, and was searching for understanding and closure concerning his death. Chris began a life, in which materials meant nothing to him, in fact he gave most of his money to charity and burned the rest of the money he had in his wallet.
Chris wanted to test himself in other ways, which is why he wanted to drop out of society. Many people call him an idiot, but many say that he was just a lost soul. Either way, we can all relate to Chris in some way. We begin to realize that this isn't just about Chris's story; it is a story about many people who were affected by Chris's Alaskan quest. Throughout the book, Chris meets many people, all from different backgrounds, who also wanted to cut all ties to modern day life, and begin to experience life the way they never thought they could. For example, Chris met a man named Wayne Westerberg, in which Chris told him to be spontaneous and live life like you never would imagine possible. Either way, Chris is a very relatable character, in te sense that we all want to do something drastic, and influence others while we do it.
