Benefits of a Second Language

             The world as we know it today is changing. All our previously held notions on the way the world is and how it works are being uprooted and subjected to the scrutiny of the world. Before the globalization of the world‘s economy and long before the influx of people transgressing borders, one could be satisfied and assured with the knowledge of only one language. But as we have seen with the conglomeration of the European Union, and the influx of Spanish into all corners of our country, one must know another language to compete in this global marketplace.
             Fifty years ago the world was as it is now, yet unknown to the individual. One knew what they knew from textbooks or through friends of friends. The Great War to end all Wars had since been ended, and a population and a generation was rising and climnbing through the ranks. Our fathers opened us up, and led us to the doorway of the great forefrunt where we stand today: the world in all its intertwinedness between countries.
             Nowadays it is nothing if commonplace for an American to have traveled to Maexico or Canada. Who does not have friends who are first generation who are bilingual. Our once tight-knitted communities are diversifying for the better. Competition is what breeds greatness, and in this country competition is growing. Now not only do Americans compete with themselves, they compete with citizens of other countries as well.
             Outsourcing has become commonplace. Many people lose their jobs to workers who can do the same skill for cheaper. The only way to ensure and strong hold security in the future is to distinguish oneself. THe best way to do this is to learn another language. By speaking another language one stands up to globalization and embraces it. By becoming at least bilingual one can prepare and help in the diversification process, without being left behind on the way there.
