The Giver vs. Our Society

             The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast The Giver to our society. The first comparison between The Giver and our society in the constitution of Family is who makes up a family. In both societies families are made up of children and parents. This is a positive way to make up a family. In 'the community? and our own society children are given a positive comfort object. In 'the community? children are given a comfort object and in our society children are given stuffed animals or other small toys. In both The Giver and our society children have positive bedtime rituals. In Lois Lowry's book Lily and Jonas? father helps Lily go to bed. In our society parents helps kids get ready for bed and then tuck them into bed. The first contrast between The Giver and our society is the number of family members. In 'the community? family units are negatively restricted to only two children, one female and one male. In our society it is positive, we have no restriction on the number or gender of children. In both societies offspring is created. In The Giver this is negative because birthmothers have kids and are given to family units. In our society parents have their own kids without the need ofbirthmothers, this is positive. In both The Giver and our society can get married. In 'the community? an adult must apply for a spouse and then the elders choose you theperfect? mate. This is negative because adults don't have a choice in who they will marry. In our society we can marry whomever we want and we don't need permission from the government, this is positive.
             Now I will compare and contrast The Giver and our society in the institution of Education. In both 'the community? and our society there are positive teacher to class ratios. In 'the community? and our society there is one teacher for each class. In both societies students are separated by age, this is positive. I
