             Which is the better choice, public, private or home school? As far as education is concerned in our country, there is a growing controversy over public vs. private schools. In today's society, most children attend public school. However, private and home schools are becoming more popular. Choosing a school, whether public, private or home school is one of the most important decisions a parent will make. To make sure that parents understand all the choices available to them, they need to research and understand all options.
             For instance, many parents choose to send their children to public schools. State law must give all students the opportunity to attend public schools. Children must attend their neighborhood school, in which the school board sets the boundaries. Federal, state and local taxes fund public schools; therefore, they cannot charge tuition. Many obligations such as transportation, textbooks, and hot lunches are provided through tax dollars. Because of the special education laws, public schools must educate all children. Many teachers in the public school setting attend training on how to work with students with special needs. By law, they must also offer English as a Second Language (ESL).
             Despite all these state-mandated programs, some parents reject public school in favor of private school. Private schools do not have to accept every child and admissions is very competitive. Children can be from different neighborhoods and be accepted. Tuition, fundraising, donations and private grants fund private schools; therefore, the student teacher ratio is smaller. Transportation and lunches are usually the responsibility of the parents. Many private schools do not have special education programs and most of the teachers have not had training to deal with special needs children. Most private schools do not offer ESL and if they do, it costs extra.
