Near the ending as the Americans are approaching there homes we hear the constant bursts of screaming and people in pain so we are aware that the Japanese are just everyday people. One technique that Malick conducts rather successfully is the ability to switch perspective and blur the mind. As well as representing American soldiers fighting for their country, we also see the Japanese fighting and being corrupted.
             Corruption is an important issue as it is a theme dealt with throughout. The Japanese families are shown first in a happy environment, singing and playing in the clean water, which signifies purity. But as the Americans approach a close up of a river is shown infected with blood. So the water has changed to being impure and stained.
             Malick's intentions towards the film is not to convey simply that war is wrong and immoral but to send a message to people that war shouldn't be glorified and applauded.
