             MEN VERSUS WOMEN IN "SAMUEL"
             New York is known for having a subway system. Many people travel on the subways because it is impossible to find parking and because the enormous amount of traffic in New York. Many people rely on the subway systems to get them to work, school, and places they may want to visit in the city. Since many people rely on the subway many do not own cars a car would just be another hassle in their life. In Grace Paley's story "Samuel" the setting is takes place in a modern New York subway. Four boys, Samuel, Alfred, Tom, and Calvin, are jiggling on a subway train platform and the author shows the variety of reactions of men and women towards the boys' actions.
             In the beginning of the story it mentions two men who have been watching the boys jiggling on the subway. The men were once brave boys who have had their fair share of adventures. One of the men notices how nice it would have been to jiggle on this day because of the nice weather and because they were out of the tunnel high over the Bronx. If a man who has never met these boys before is able to relate to their jiggling only portrays Paley's version of men. These men are not considering the welfare of the children, they are only able to conceive the notion of bravery and how it related to them. A third man mentioned later on in the story seems to take all action without consideration for the boys. The man views the boys, becomes annoyed, and then pulls the emergency brake so the boys would stop. One of the boys, Samuel, was not holding on to a chain for safety and gets thrown head first in between the subway cars and dies. Not all men would react in this way, but Paley biased opinion may shows her portrayal of them.
