             The main authority figure in the psychiatric ward is Nurse Ratchet, or as the patients call her, Big Nurse. She has a lack of womanly characteristics and the only thing that keeps her related to the human species are her gargantuan breasts. She tries to keep them concealed and hidden from the patients by wearing a heavily starched, white uniform, but they are too large to be kept a secret. Her face is compared to one of an expensive baby doll, "smooth, calculated, and precision-made." (Kesey 11) Her movement and speech are also doll like and emotionless and all of her responses are automated and precise.(Ross 2) Nurse Ratchets' comparison to a baby doll and her mechanical movements make her the "combine" and a symbol of a authority figure in society.
             Her power and control stretches well past the patients. She has the other nurses, the ward attendants, and even doctor Spivey in the palm of her hand. Her domineering personality makes people turn very submissive to her demands. They are afraid of her and what she might do them if they disobey her.
