Realization of Death in Wit

             Vivian Bearing is the main character of the play Wit, which revolves around her dealing with cancer in a hospital environment with no true friends and little human contact. The play is ironically named after the large amount of wit Vivian tosses out in her dialogue, and this helps make it seem like more of a comedy than a drama. Towards the end of the play the climax becomes apparent when Vivian finally realizes that the cancer treatments are not helping, and that she will most likely die. The climax of the play occurs when Vivian realizes death is inevitable and breaks into tears while talking to Susie, deciding that if she dies she does not want to be resuscitated.
             The climax of the play starts at four in the morning where Vivian gets the attention of Susie because she wanted to see her. This is the first time in the play that Vivian has actually let her emotions show and she lets Susie know how she feels, "(Crying, in spite of herself) I'm scared." (pg. 1807) When Vivian says this it is the first time she has acknowledged her fear of death in the play, and this realization of death is the climax of the play. Vivian then continues to talk to Susie relaying all her fears of dying. This climax occurs with Susie because Vivian doesn't have many friends and during her stay in the hospital Susie has always been kind to her.
             This climax carries over into a start of a new conversation where Susie actually tells Vivian that her cancer isn't being cured. Her cancer was never going to be cured and the sudden realization of this is the climax of the play. Before this talk with Susie, Vivian had always
